Saudi Arabia Intercepts Missile Fired By Rebels Into Holy Mecca. Photos

Saudi Arabia has allegedly intercepted a ballistic missile launched from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen towards Islam's holiest city of Mecca. According to the Saudi-led coalition, Houthi rebels launched a Scud missile from Saada province towards Mecca on Thursday.

The Saudi air defense system was able to intercept and destroy the missile 65 kilometers (40 miles) from the target site. Saudi authorities said the missile caused no damage.

Major General Ahmed Asiri, a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, accused Iran and Hezbollah of supporting the rebels and training them to use technology which enables them to launch such attacks. Asiri also announced retaliatory strikes against the Houthis.

The Houthis confirmed the launch of a Scud-type ballistic missile known as Burkan-1 into Saudi Arabia via Saba news agency, but said the projectile was targeting the kingdom’s busiest airport in Jeddah – not Islam’s holiest city, which lies just over 60 kilometers (37 miles) away.

The mobile policeman who is from Ngas tribe from Kanke local government of Plateau central senatorial zone has a wife and three children, and their bread winner was killed in their presence.

The Plateau state police command confirmed the attack and also confirmed that four suspected Fulani men residing in a nearby camp have been arrested and are already helping the police with relevant information.

One of the neighbours to the deceased, Raymond Gukas narrated how the victim was killed: “I lived very close to the policeman and last Sunday evening, at about 8pm, I was at home with my family watching television program when we heard a gun shot. I began to wonder who shot the gun, but we were careful not to rush out, after while we started hearing the cry from that direction, and I went to out to discovered that the gun shot we heard was the shot aimed at our policeman neighbour.

Mr. Gukas said, “we heard that the mopol was also resting with his family at their residence when they heard their dog barking, later on, there was a knock on their door. When the mopol was trying to open the door, his wife warned him not to open the door, but that the mopol said it was too late in the night to exercise such fear, arguing that it could be a neighbour that was knocking.

“But as soon as he opened the door to find out who was there, the assailant grabbed him and dragged him outside. About three of the assailants held him down and asked him where he kept his rifle, the mopol told them he does not come home with his rifle, but they never believed him and so two of the assailants went to his room and asked the family to show them where the man used to keep his rifle. When the assailants realised the family was not cooperating, they searched his inner room and got his rifle and while in his room they informed those who held the mopol outside that they have found the rifle and immediately, the mopol was shot at close range. Tray assailants remained there to ensure they confirmed him dead, they pushed his body into the gutter, then went to meet those in the room to tell them that they have killed him, and they fled immediately after that.

The assailants allegedly fled with the rifle of the victim.

“The family only rushed out to see the body of their bread winner in the pool of blood. The wife shouted to attract neighbours who came out and tried to rush him to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) where the mopol was confirmed dead”

Residents of the Kwanga community recovered from the shock to point accusing fingers on the Fulani group residing close to the village. They made their suspicions known to security agencies. The security agencies raided the Fulani residents and arrested five of them.

THE NATION found out that the deceased mopol may have just returned from the North East where he was posted to join the fight against insurgents. He must have returned home with the last one month to rest with his family before the next posting, only to be trailed and killed in the presence of his wife and children.

Late Gompil has only relocated to his personal house where he has put up a four-bedroom apartment to make his family comfortable after several years as a tenant.

The public relation officer Jos, DSP Terna Martins said investigation is still on to ascertain the motive behind the attack, the involvement of the suspects and death of the policeman.
