Emirates launches new flights to Nigerian capital, Abuja

Emirates has now connected Abuja to its worldwide network, making the Nigerian capital the airline’s 26th destination in Africa and its 144th worldwide.
Emirates flight EK785 landed at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport earlier, marking the start of the airline’s daily service to its second destination in Nigeria.
Services to Lagos were launched just over ten years ago.
“This new daily flight provides a convenient point to point service for our customers between Abuja and Dubai, and it will meet and further stimulate a vibrant market demand between the two cities.
“It will also serve our customers in Nigeria and around the network with additional connectivity and daily frequency.
“Our leisure and business passengers from Nigeria can now better connect to the Middle East, Europe, the United States and Asia via our hub in Dubai.


“Customers in Abuja can experience our A380 flagship aircraft to 29 destinations around the world, including popular ones like Beijing, Hong Kong, Mumbai, New York, Jeddah and London,” said Adil Al Ghaith, Emirates vice president commercial operations, Northern and Western Africa.
“With a fast growing economy, Nigeria is a key market for Emirates.
“We started operations to Nigeria on 2nd January 2004, with four flights a week from Dubai to Lagos.
“Since then, our operations have steadily grown with increases in both frequency and capacity between Lagos and Dubai.
“Today, we fly twice daily to Lagos and now we have added Abuja, giving us a total of more than 12,200 seats a week, which will further stimulate business and leisure travel, as well as trade,” he added.
Emirates flight EK785 departs Dubai daily at 10:50hrs and arrives in Abuja at 15:10hrs.
The return flight, EK 786 departs Abuja at 19:35hrs and arrives in Dubai at 05:50hrs the next morning.

Arik Air increases frequency on Lagos-Dakar route

Arik Air is increasing its frequency on the Lagos-Dakar route to a daily service, up from six weekly flights.
The new schedule, which will operate from February 22nd, will operate with four of the Lagos-Dakar flights routed via Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire instead of the previous routing via Banjul.
The other three flights will continue to operate via Accra, Ghana.
The Lagos-Abidjan-Dakar service will operate on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday while the Lagos-Accra-Dakar service will operate on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
With the new schedule, Arik Air will be able to provide its customers convenient access between Lagos, Abuja, Accra, Abidjan and Dakar markets.


The airline will also be increasing its frequency on the Lagos-Banjul route from three weekly to four weekly flights effective March 14th.
All the flights will be operated via Accra using a Boeing 737-700 Next Generation (NG) aircraft.
The Lagos-Accra-Banjul service will be operated on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Sunday, making Arik Air the only airline operating non-stop from Banjul to Accra.
Additionally, Abuja passengers can connect conveniently to Banjul viaAccra on all four days.

“We are committed to improving these connections to facilitate the movement of passengers and cargo seamlessly across our expanding network.”

Rooney sees management in his future

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has revealed he wants to go into management when he hangs up his boots.
The 31-year-old, who recently became United's record goalscorer, has made more than enough money to retire and spend the rest of his life relaxing, but the England captain loves the sport too much to walk away.
"My whole life has been around football, and the minute I finish playing I would like to try and stay in the game and hopefully get the opportunity to manage," Rooney told the BBC on Friday.
"I think when you get a bit older you start to think a bit more about the game and it's something I'd love to do.
"Players who are playing in this generation do have enough money to not have to go into management, so the ones who want to do it will be successful."
Rooney surpassed Bobby Charlton's record United tally of 249 goals with his stunning free-kick that grabbed United a late 1-1 Premier League draw at Stoke on Saturday.
But after 15 years of top-flight football and 250 goals for United, Rooney admitted finding the back of the net still provides an unrivalled rush.
Rooney revealed that celebrating a goal is perhaps the sole moment in a match when a player can burst their concentration bubble to appreciate the full impact of the crowd.
"It's an amazing feeling when you score a goal," said Rooney.
"The initial feeling, it's like you're playing football under water and when you score the goal you come up for air. And you can hear the crowd, the atmosphere for that four, five seconds; it's a mad feeling."

Sir Mo Farah: Olympic champion criticises Donald Trump's US travel ban

Britain's four-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Mo Farah has criticised US President Donald Trump for imposing an order that leaves him unsure whether he can return to the United States.

Farah, 33, was born in Somalia but has lived in Oregon for the past six years.
Somali nationals are among those banned from travelling to the US under the executive order issued on Friday.
"It's deeply troubling that I will have to tell my children daddy might not be able to come home," said Farah.
Writing on his Facebook page, he added: "On 1 January this year, Her Majesty The Queen made me a Knight of the Realm. On 27 January, President Donald Trump seems to have made me an alien."
Farah said he believed Trump's policy "comes from a place of ignorance and prejudice" and his story is "an example of what can happen when you follow polices of compassion and understanding, not hate and isolation".
It is unclear whether Farah, who moved to Britain aged eight, will be able to return to the US.
Trump's executive order halted the entire US refugee programme and also instituted a 90-day travel ban for nationals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
The executive order also applies to those who hold dual nationality with one of the listed countries.
On Saturday, a US judge issued a temporary halt to the deportation of visa holders or refugees stranded at airports.

Farah does not have dual nationality or hold a Somali passport and it is understood his advisers are trying to clarify the situation with the US authorities.
The athlete is at a training camp in Ethiopia as part of his preparations for August's World Championships in London, and is not planning to return to the US for a number of weeks.
He said: "I am a British citizen who has lived in America for the past six years - working hard, contributing to society, paying my taxes and bringing up our four children in the place they now call home.
"Now me, and many others like me, are being told that we may not be welcome."
